About me

I qualified as a counsellor 29 years ago and have worked since then in various settings, with people with a wide variety of social and ethnic backgrounds, in voluntary organisations, a GP Health Centre, as a University Staff and Student Counsellor and in private practice. As a psychodynamic counsellor, I draw on contemporary approaches to psychotherapy and counselling (rather than more classical theory and practice). I provide a supportive and reflective environment where together we can explore and understand your concerns, enable you to discover personal strengths and meaningful responses to your difficulties. A person may feel unhappy, stuck or confused. Understanding the origins of these feelings can help make sense of their current or habitual ways of protecting themselves. In gaining more self-acceptance, a person can then become more aware of their feelings and responses and those of others, and explore more satisfying ways of being and relating to others and to themselves. In the case of working through loss, trauma or abuse, the process can vary with each individual. It can be helpful to talk to a person who is not in a close relationship with you, who understands and can respectfully support a process of recovery at a pace appropriate to you.

I have worked with a wide range of clients, in particular with people who experience:
- Depression
- Anxiety and stress
- Bereavement and loss
- Work-related issues
- Relationship issues
- Low self-esteem
- Lack of self-confidence
- Lack of sense of direction
- The impact of having grown up with an authoritarian or emotionally remote parent
- Feeling overwhelmed as a carer
- Sexual and emotional abuse
- Self-harm

I offer short-term or open-ended counselling.

In the first few sessions, I will want to explore your concerns and what you wish to gain from counselling. If we both then feel that I can be of help to you, we usually meet weekly.
